I've been asked on many occasions what I think about using Artificial Intelligence for coding. The following is my thinking on this subject:

First off, there is no AI. I started using AI in the 1990s at MIT so have a long history with the subject. There is pattern matching algorithms using decision branching methodology.

AI is certainly very useful and will become much more useful in the future once recursive AI and AGI evolves. It is and will be very useful for repetitive tasks encountered in coding and also the physical world. A primary desire of mine is to have AI perform end-user automated application testing, not just unit testing or event driven testing but actual discipline-specific testing. The technology is not there yet but I am looking forward to this feature because testing, interaction testing, is very laborious and difficult to get humans to do. In regard to AI for primary coding. This has a great amount of appeal and I think I know why, but first I have to tell you a few stories. I help corporate and government entities with their data automation and SDLC needs. I have noticed that there are two very big impediments to the SDLC that AI can help out with.

The first impediment, candidly speaking, is the underperforming employee. I have been in situations where an employee could not solve a problem for half a year so I solve it for them within a few hours and submit the solutions to git. Occasionally, I have solved such problems in my sleep and simply type the code into the repository the next day. Six months v.s. an easy-peasy solution. Certainly AI can curtail this vast difference in abilities and I would prefer to wrestle with an AI agent than a human for sure.

The second impediment is management. No matter how often I scrutinize the virtues of Agile, Iterative Development and Team cooperation sometimes management is simply not receptive. This has happened during large government Agile Transformation projects (worth hundreds of millions of dollars) to smaller multi-million dollar projects where the business should know better; for example these virtues should be obvious to a billion dollar Six Sigma company but is it not. Introducing AI can be a means of getting poor decision making out of the hands of human managers and placing it into the hands of more reliable AI techniques.

So, AI may be able to accommodate those impediments but a well functioning organization with good management and employees can make much better use of AI particularly for repetitive tasks. Interested in my help? Contact me at ed@vvi.com.
